How To Distinguish Good And Bad Degradable Bags?

Jul 09, 2024

To distinguish the quality of a degraded bag, you can do it through the following steps:

1. Check whether the production information of the plastic bag is complete: check whether the plastic bag has a complete name, graphic identification, material composition, degradation conditions, specifications, load-bearing capacity, and manufacturer information. Non-degradable plastic bags are generally missing more than one or more key pieces of information.

2. Check the material information of the plastic bag: the most reliable method is to identify the material. Non-degradable materials refer to non-biodegradable polymer materials containing polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and other non-biodegradable polymer materials.

3. Look at the implementation standards: There are currently three implementation standards in China, of which GB/T 38082-2019 biodegradable plastic shopping bags require their biodegradability greater than or equal to 90%, while GB/T 21661-2020 and GB/T 38079-2019 standards have no specific requirements for the "degradability" of plastic bags.

4. Look at the name: Biodegradable plastic bags have a clear name, such as "plastic shopping bags for direct food contact" or "biodegradable plastic shopping bags for direct contact with non-food", while non-degradable shopping bags will not use this name.

5. Material judgment: The real biodegradable plastic material is usually polylactic acid (PLA), polyadipic acid/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) or PLA+PBAT+starch (St). If the product contains polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), it may not be a true biodegradable plastic.

6. Certification mark: If the product has a clear degradable certification, such as in accordance with United States ASTM D6400 and EU EN 13432 standards, theoretically it should be compostable and degradable.

Through these steps, consumers can more accurately distinguish the quality of degradable bags and avoid buying counterfeit degradable products.
